COURSE DESCRIPTION:


This program looks at the latest pharmaceutical advances in eyecare with a focus on the most recent FDA-approved agents. It is a fast-paced review of therapeutics that currently or soon will affect optometry including indications, dosing, and unique aspects of the therapeutic agents. The pipeline for the next couple of years will be explored with an emphasis on the most innovative prescription medications for ocular disease management.



LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


  • Identify and explain the most recent FDA-approved pharmaceutical agents for eyecare, including their indications, dosing regimens, and unique therapeutic aspects.
  • Analyze the impact of innovative prescription medications on optometry practice, focusing on their efficacy and potential benefits for managing ocular diseases.
  • Evaluate the pharmaceutical pipeline for upcoming years, emphasizing emerging therapeutic trends and potential advancements in ocular disease management.
  • Assess the safety profiles and potential side effects of newly approved and emerging ocular pharmaceuticals, and discuss strategies for monitoring and managing these adverse effects in clinical practice.
  • Integrate knowledge of new pharmacological agents into clinical decision-making by formulating evidence-based treatment plans for specific ocular conditions, considering patient demographics and co-existing health issues.
  • Compare and contrast the clinical outcomes of new ocular therapies with established treatments, including considerations of cost-effectiveness and long-term impact on patient quality of life

Dr. Paul Karpecki

Paul M. Karpecki, OD, FAAO

Dr. Karpecki received his doctor of optometry degree from Indiana University and completed a Fellowship in Medical Cornea in Kansas City in affiliation with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He currently serves as Director of Cornea and External Disease for the Kentucky Eye Institute in Lexington KY, and is an Associate Professor at the Kentucky College of Optometry. He is also the Chief Medical Editor for Review of Optometry, the most read journal in the profession.
